Princess Elizabeth c1546

This is Princess Elizabeth aged about 13 when her father Henry was still alive.

This portrait is in the Tudor and Stuart royal clothing exhibition at the Queens Gallery. It is noted that her crimson gown has gold thread, at a time when gold thread was by sumptuary laws limited to only members of the royal family.

Although Henry was well disposed towards Elizabeth at this time she was officially still deemed to be illegitimate.

More striking than the dress is the Princess' demeanour, she is extraordinarily self possessed and determined!
