Ring of Brodgar

I have never been to Stonehenge but was once asked to arrange some courses on the site. What a complete waste of time and effort. Yes you can book the place but only on a first come first served basis with booking on an undisclosed day at an undisclosed time during May each year and by secret ballot via English Heritage. There's no touching, no flash photography and the time slot for use is around 2 hours. Insurance, up front fees and references prevail. Goodness knows how the druids cope!
By contrast Orkney boasts the Ring of Brodgar. It predates Stonehenge by a few hundred years and is almost as big at 104 metres in diameter. It is completely free to walk around, flash and indeed touching are encouraged and like with the Callanish Stones on Lewis you could make a movie or hold a ceremony here and the locals would be out with cups of tea and even whisky just to keep you going.
It's a lovely place indeed and if you tire of it there's always Scara Brae, the Italian Chapel and the rather lovely cathedral of St Magnus to have a wee look around.
