Exploring Wells and Walsingham

Another day spent on the bikes. We parked by the side of the road in the sleepy village of Wighton and set off along a rough track to Wells-next-the-Sea. After stopping in a pleasant park for a sandwich lunch, we headed on down to the seaside, along a promenade and on to the beach. It wasn't a particularly warm day but the beach was fairly crowded with young families and some older folk, and we rather liked the long line of beach huts.

Then west along more rough track through coastal wooded parkland, passing a school outing on a nature safari, we turned south to Holkham Park, stopping briefly, tempted by a roll and sausage and carrot cake. Continuing south through the massive parkland, with its impressive obelisk and wrought iron gates, by now it had started spitting rain. Then, heading for Walsingham, we were back on quiet roads and eventually came to the Slipper Chapel, where we stopped briefly at the candle-lit shrine, before heading on to the mediaeval pilgrimage village of Little Walsingham. Here were many very old buildings, but not many people today. By now, late in the afternoon, the rain was coming down in slightly bigger splodges, though not enough to soak us as we returned to the car. Altogether a great and varied 20 miles cycle.

On our return, mum and her ducklings were waiting to greet us. We just can't believe we've been here a week - we could easily have spent a fortnight.
