One life to live

Vierumäki

At 8:00 we picked up Annika and Petra, girls from Emma's sport club, and headed towards Heinola and Vierumäki, The Sport Institute of Finland. Emma was invited to a national basketball team's first tryout camp for girls 14 years or younger. The camp lasts till Sunday. Girls were quite excited, hopefully they'll have a good time there. Their time schedule is full of workouts, so at least they won't get bored.

The Sport Institute of Finland was established in 1927. The main building (in the picture) was designed by the architect Erik Bryggman, who won the public architectural competition held for the project in 1930.(Erik Bryggman, (1891-1955), brought modern functionalist architecture to Finland.) The main building was completed in 1936. It is regarded also internationally as one of the most important sports facilities of its period. It represents the early severe stage of functionalist architecture in Finland. The building is protected by law and is on the list of nationally significant cultural environments (published in 2009 by the National Board of Antiquities and the Ministry of the Environment),

Lailla suojellut rakennukset

I like this kind of clean lines architecture, buildings like this stand the test of time.
