The view from Castel Gandolfo where the previous Pope now lives, and the summer residence of the existing Pope when he's not in Rome

The lake is the blown out crater of a volcano and is filled from underneath. About 300BC it surged out so much water it flooded the nearby fields, so an overflow was built into the surrounding mountain wall keeping the lake at a steady depth.
