Pantiles, Royal Tunbridge Wells

This photo of the Pantiles shows high contrast with the white shop fronts and the shadowed tree, which could make the picture too "snow-and-soot".
Obviously this could be controlled by reducing contrast, but this would dull the image. HDR would also work, but the nature of the image allows a simpler method;

As the light areas are on the left and the dark areas on the right, I applied a slight gradient layer to the picture in Overlay mode. This is the post-processing equivalent of a graduated ND filter in vertical orientation.

I also found the brightly-lit Tourist Information sign (bottom right) a distraction, so I added another layer with a smudged dark stain with a Gaussian blur applied over the sign and set this to Colour Burn mode but dialled down its impact.
