Life is like a river

In Brekkuþorp, Mjóifjörður

Yes, this is the day Blipfoto came to visit one of the smallest and most remote villages in Iceland!

Even though we've regularly been travelling to the Eastern Region of Iceland we've never been to this beautiful place before.

An internet travel guide can tell us something about it:

"Mjóifjörður, the "narrow fjord", 18 km. long, is situated between Norðfjörður and Seyðisfjörður, and is known for pleasant weather and tranquillity. The road leading to the fjord is relatively good, but is usually closed in winter, when the only access to Mjóifjörður is by the scheduled Fjardaferdir boat from Norðfjörður. The exhilarating road on the north side runs along the fjord side to Dalatangi, a lighthouse with a most magnificent view out towards the open ocean. There are many attractions in Mjóifjörður, which is considered by many people to be the most impressive fjord in Iceland. The beautiful waterfalls Klifbrekkufossar tumble down by the roadside. The ravine Prestagil " the Priest's Ravine", is so named because of a local folktale that tells of a huge troll woman that tried to seduce a priest into the ravine, is on the south side. Another challenging gorge is Hofsárgljúfur on the way to Dalatangi, stop by the bridge an look down. The small inlet of Smjörvogur, close to Hofsárgljúfur, was once used as a prison as there was no way in, or out of it, without assistance. At Asknes are the remains of an old whaling station, the largest in the world at the time it was built by the Norwegians around 1900, with over 200 hundred workers. Today, some 40 people live in Mjóifjörður, mostly in the tiny village, Brekkuþorp.A visit to the solitary Dalatangi lighthouse is worth your while, as is a boattrip along the fjord".

We saw the main sights, drove all the way to the lighthouse at Dalatangi and I took a lot of photos on the way. We got some refreshments at Sólbrekka Café and that's where I met "my stranger" for the new Blipfoto-project. I was a bit nervous to ask permission to take the picture and also very nervous about messing up the photo, since I'd never used a disposable camera before. I just hope there's actually a photo on the film, because I didn't turn on the flash... probably should have...and did it actually "click"?

Maybe my contribution to the project will be a black rectangle? So many "ifs", "buts" and "should-haves"!

But it was fun, and that's the main thing.
Thank you for participating Ástrún Jóhanna, waitress at Sólbrekka Café :)

The evening was spent in Reyðarfjörður where my friends Helga and Palli now live. Always a pleasure to have a glass of red and a good chat with Helga!
