Man in a hole

In Scotland we call them Cundees, which sounds ever so slightly rude. They're storm drains built in the days when a farm this size would employ twenty men full time. In the quiet moments, they'd dig deep trenches and build large stone drains that would make the Romans proud. Some of them over near St Andrews are so big that when they collapse the sheep get down them and stray onto the beach.

This one went under a gateway, and collapsed under the weight of a 25 ton trailer hauling out rock for a new track. You can see one of the smaller blocks used in its construction close by Val's head. All these stones were laid by hand - no JCBs back then.
