Art By Theaster Gates.

MY LABOUR IS MY PROTEST is the title of this artwork on a decommisioned 1969 Hahn Fire Truck by Theaster Gates 2012. It has been reclaimed for the purposes of art and also from a devastating secondary use as a weapon of war in the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S.A. The truck is daubed with tar, a substance that carries a range of associations. Gates has linked his artworks to a number of community projects. I decided to capture some more of the displays in Jesus College under the heading 'Sculpture in the Close.' Seeing this truck in the centre of the immaculate lawn of the Second Court, I thought there was some sort of work going on. I was as wrong about this as yesterday's stacked tables blip. Without reading the brochure, one would never guess what it was all about, although there is a video explaining this work. I leave you to make up your own minds about this.
