Signal Box

The village of Blair Atholl stands between the old A9 Perth to Inverness road and the main Glasgow to Inverness and north rail line. This signal box, with its traditional levers and whistles, is in regular daily use, but there is currently a programme to replace these old methods of operating signals with new digital technology. Last Friday 26 July, it was announced that 26 such signal boxes in England were to be given listed status in order to preserve these reminders of our railway's Victorian past. The 26 mentioned in England are to come under the auspices of English Heritage. No doubt Scotland will be making its own arrangements. This signal box is particularly attractive with its white picket fence and gate, and even the weeds add to the colourful scene.
(I've tried hard to keep the uprights quite upright here, but in this picture, it's been pretty near impossible!)
