Fossils

As it's very foggy in Lyme Regis today I thought I would let you see my fossil collection instead of venturing outdoors. All of these fossils are around 150 million years old and were found on the beach between Lyme Regis and Charmouth. The spiral fossil inside the pebble is an ammonite, this was a mollusc related to the squid. The bullet shaped fossils are belemnites, the spines of a squid like creature, these are probably the most easily found fossil. The wood in the stone along the top of the photo is fossilised monkey puzzle tree from the Jurassic period. If you ever come to this area of Dorset fossil hunting at low tide is really good fun and there are lots of organised tours with geologists and paleontologists.
