But, then again . . . . .

The Quest.

An audax is a long distance, ratified cycle ride. The LEL (London-Edinburgh-London) at a little over 1400 km (780 miles) is the longest organised ride in the UK and attracts some strange vehicles (and riders). I went along to the Mbra control as a volunteer. The school's facilities were first class with them providing their normal restaurant, the showers and a laundry while the event organisers provided 150 beds, blankets and towels.

My first task was to plumb in a hose-pipe so that the riders had ready access to drinking water to take up the road, this involved some creative engineering with industrial size zip-ties and loads of paper towels, Edward Heath Robinson would have been proud of the construction but it held up (just) for the duration.

The Quest, ridden by Ian, is a fully enclosed tricycle and must be very heavy. He arrived in Mbra 32.5 hours after leaving London, a distance of about 438 miles and an average speed of 13.5 miles an hour. It's not a brilliant picture, I need practice at moving subjects with electronic cameras, but I thought it well worth posting. Ian was about the fifth rider to arrive if I remember correctly.

From the point of view of a volunteer, the day went fairly slowly so, guessing at what was to come, I went to bed at 10 pm and had a couple of hours sleep.
