A Bit Of History ...

Today a bit of history. Before entering Colmars les Alpes from the south, you pass a big fortification built on the rocks, which is called 'Le Fort De France' (The France Fort). When you go to the Tourist Information you can read about the history of Colmars and its fortifications.

History goes back to the end of the 14th century when the town of Colmars became a frontier town, protecting Provence against the Savoyard invaders. First an oval wall was built with square towers. Through the centuries this first medieval wall was often rebuilt and improved. But it's at the end of the 17th century that the fortification take on its actual appearance.

There's so many a way to picture this ancient fort. I chose for a standpoint at the south side at a lower level where the French flag proudly streams in the wind against the fabulous Mediterranean blue sky ...

Weather report: a sky like described above and a top temperature of 30°C.
