Where Katy Went...

Surprised to meet the Katydid this afternoon up on the deck blending in with a grey-leafed succulent plant. She has developed a rough brown spot along her upper spine that helps with her attempt to look like a leaf. It also appears to be tree bark. The long thin legs sticking up look like twigs.
We met her for the first time on 30th of July while she walked across the ramp I was painting. It was a close up blip with her full shadow in the bright sunshine. This photo gives a better impression of her actual size. The plant that she's communing with sets up on the top shelf of a baker's rack. I think there is an answer here to someone's question about whether katydids can fly.
Katydids seem to be related to locusts but their bright green colouring and near solitary lifestyle render them far more harmless to plants than a flying hoard of locusts that have been known strip whole fields in no time flat.
Perhaps it is just me but I feel she's an auspicious visitor to my garden this summer '13, and a memorable one as well.
If she is like the praying mantis-- who could be a near relative, then she will turn nut brown by the time frost comes and she dies. I do hope she finds a mate before then.
