Mosaic floor in Otranto
The cathedral in Otranto is paved with a huge and amazing medieval (12th century) mosaic floor depicting among other things, a massive tree of life surrounded by a large number of real and fantastic animals, images of good and evil, a multitude of scenes from the bible and other sources, signs of the zodiac, etc. Composed of about 600,000 limestone tesserae, and covering the entire area of the cathedral, it is one of the largest and best preserved medieval mosaics in Europe.
