Between fen and mountains

The ice house

There are quite a few ice houses in the department, probably because of the warm climate. They were filled with snow from the top in winter, which was then compacted over time and ice could be withdrawn at the bottom. I had to squat and virtually crawl along a couple of short, narrow passages to see the pit which was probably around 10 metres deep and 5 metres across so it would have stored a lot of ice. On our walk we also saw a line kiln, various mountain chapels and a castle. It was cool and very cloudy to start with but the weather improved as the day wore on. In all, we covered 12 kilometres with a little less than 300 metres of climbing.
