Thufurs

At first sight you might think these mounds were ant hills or perhaps boulders over which grass has grown. They are however apparently known as Thufurs and they are of periglacial origin. Examples can be found in certain areas on the north and north-west of Dartmoor. This photo was taken today on the northern side of Cox Tor where a large area is completely covered with them. They create a strange and rather unusual landscape.
Is Thufur a scrabble word? The answer is no, so the only thing left to do was to share the photo as a blip!
