Matera

I've been wanting to see Matera for some years, and it did not disappoint. A fascinating place  perched on the edge of a ravine, full of cave dwellings and underground churches, now a world heritage site.
Local families lived in the very basic cave houses in extreme poverty, without electricity, running water or sanitation, right up until the 50s and 60s when they were rehoused in the upper town in better conditions.
