Reclaimed

I post a lot of photos taken in Sydney Park and today's is particularly relevant to the subtheme of 'reclaimed'.

The land comprising Sydney Park used to be a brick pit and brickworks. This function ceased in 1971 and I am grateful that the kilns and their enormous chimneys have been preserved, protected and continue to stand within the park.

Prior to the industrial use of the land, in fact before British settlement, the area was forest, swamp and heathland. You could say that the establishment of Sydney Park represents a reclamation of the land as it was more than two hundred years ago. With its contours, forests and wetlands, it supports many native species of flora and fauna.

The wetlands are my favourite feature and I love seeing the range of bird life. Their ranks are thinning with the change of season, leaving the perennials of ibis, coots and cormorants.
