End of the line
We've 'got a man in' tomorrow to do a few odd jobs so had to make sure everything was ready for his arrival in the morning. The weather wasn't great anyway; not wet, but a bit cloudy and chilly, so I wasn't too bothered about not going out but by mid-afternoon I thought I'd have a wander over to the railway to see if there was anything to blip.
I was just in time to see this arrive; the same engine that I blipped a couple of days ago but today at the other end of the line in Holt rather than Sheringham. The headboard reflects the fact that it is 50 years this year since the North Norfolk Railway first ran trains along the line. The route had been closed in 1964 as part of the infamous 'Dr Beeching' cuts and the track had been lifted, but the Midland and Great Eastern Joint Railway Preservation Society was able to raise the necessary funds to buy most of the line and relay the track. Sadly, the final section to the original station in Holt had been used by the County Council to build a bypass around the town so the present station is about a mile out of town. There is a proposal by another group, the Norfolk Orbital Railway, to rebuild the line and run a full train service back into town and beyond (there is just enough space by the side of the bypass), but I think it is generally accepted that whilst it would be nice to do, it'll probably never happen.
