Given his medical history, his obvious recent frailty and age it ought not to have been a surprise to learn that Pope Francis had died. But it was, probably because we had seen him out and about just yesterday. But, like this bubble, life is fragile and he evidently spent his last energies in fulfilling his obligations for Easter Sunday.

All the messages and tributes speak of his humble nature, his abhorrence or war and his care for those on the margins of society. One person at the Easter Eggstravaganza at our church today, who had met Pope Francis, said that at heart he was a parish minister elevated to the top of his church. But throughout tried to keep in touch with ordinary people.

The rain held off long enough for events outside - egg and spoon and wheelbarrow races, Easter egg rolling and games - while inside people of all ages were busy with art work, colouring in and making Easter Bonnets (see the photo of 27 March) and the attached. One child had glued enough eggs and wee chicks onto the top of hers to open a chicken farm!

While those in the Catholic community - and beyond - mourn the loss of their leader, life goes on and it was great to see the fellowship happening and several new faces attending the event.
