Scary

I'm sure everyone will know this is the Black Swan, you may not think of him as scary but trust me if you have a bag of food in your hand some of them will stretch their necks so long it would reach your bag of food! And it would be gone in a nanosecond! They have been known to chase you too?!
When we go to the waters edge to look at them we go with caution.
Cute, but some of them can be quite scary!

The Black Swan is our State Emblem, he is on the Western Australian Flag and appears also on the Coat Of Arms, they are a protected species by the National Parks And Wildlife.

They were first seen by a Dutch Navigator De Vlamingh, he sailed up the Swan river in 1697, (The dutch also the French passed Australia off as uninhabitable) De Vlamingh took three of the Black Swans aboard his ship The Batavia and later took them to Indonesia where they all died.

Captain James Stirling sighted them on his expedition in 1827 also on the Swan River.
They were a food source for the early settlers as they were in abundance then, now they are far less common on our river, although they are not on the endangered list, thank goodness
(that would be too scary!)
They were later introduced from Australia to NewZealand.
