Ornate and ordinary
I walked to South Woodford this morning for my annual hearing test – all good, fortunately.
This Arts & Crafts building is the hall to St. Mary’s Church, South Woodford, which I’ve blipped before. I particularly like the font used for the copper sign over the door. I was very taken today by the contrast between the ornate architecture of the spire and weather vane on this building, and the relatively modern block of flats beside it. I’ve only included a glimpse of the flats because I think they are utterly soulless, seeming to have been designed down to a price, with a flat roof and unevenly sized windows (depending on whether or not they open). With no design details to add interest or beauty, they exist rather uncomfortably beside their more elegant neighbour.
