Man at work…
This is a shop in Mill Street being renovated and this man was certainly hard at work. So absorbed in what he was doing I’m pretty sure he didn’t notice me.
Since it’s Flower Friday I’ve added a couple of pics of window boxes high above Mansell Street.
And today’s ’where did that wood of phrase come from’ is Bummer…
The word bummer originates from the German bummler, meaning “loafer,” as in a lazy person. In English, the word bum had a similar meaning, and by the late 1960s, phrases like bum deal or bum rap lent themselves to the elongated bummer, referring to something that's disheartening or disappointing.
And for those of you who like me have never heard of a bum rap…
Bum rap
nounINFORMAL•NORTH AMERICAN
a false charge, typically one leading to imprisonment.
an unfair judgement on someone or something.
"the industry often gets a bum rap for being dishonest"
There is a wall opposite the Town Church known as loafers’ wall. Bummers wall would be appropriate; although these days people don’t seem to hang out there. And I guess we still don’t give German names to things over here…
