Blue Velvet - not so straight

Our local film society organised a special evening to mark the passing of director David Lynch. (It was Gwyn's original suggestion, adopted enthusiastically by our committee.)  We plumped for The Straight Story, his most comforting film, followed by Blue Velvet, his most unsettling. Gwyn and the family came over for the evening, and Huw was already coming down on the train for Easter, so we organised a rota: Ceridwen and Jess to watch the first film while Gwyn fed the girls and put them to bed, then a swapover during the interval so that Huw and Gwyn could join me for the second half (I was there for the whole marathon). Unfortunately The Straight Story failed to run for complex technical reasons (after half an hour of trying), and we had to apologise to the audience and refund their admission. But Blue Velvet was even more powerful, and indeed unsettling, on a fresh viewing than any of us remembered. The very opposite of a straight story.

The best laid plans, eh?
