Porvoo, Finland

Another day, another country!  This time we are docked in Helsinki, Finland, and we took a trip to the scenic old town of Porvoo about an hour's drive from the capital.  There we visited the Cathedral, the first version of which was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.  After several fires, the present church was completed in the 1450's.  Interestingly, we were told that back then the Finnish people weren't particularly interested in converting to Christianity, but partly due to some "clever marketing" involving the addition of mythical animals like the unicorn to the interior decoration, it was finally accepted.

We then wandered about the pretty town, window shopping, tasting some delicious chocolate in one store, and ended up in a coffee shop which served us some traditional Runeberg Torte which was very tasty!

In the bottom right corner of the collage is a not-very-well-photographed-Ferris Wheel-because-it-was-taken-through-a-bus-window-in-Helsinki, and I was greatly amused to hear that the dark car is a sauna big enough for four people!!!!  Oh, how the Finns love their saunas!
