Magnolia Time...
Magnolia trees all over Gainesville are blooming like crazy! There are over 200 varieties of magnolia, four of which are native to Florida. The Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, found growing wild in North and Central Florida is an evergreen that produces large fragrant flowers.
The Sweetbay Magnolia, Magnolia virginiana, is semi-evergreen with leaves that are dark green above and silvery underneath. Smaller than the Southern Magnolia, it thrives in wetland habitats.
The Ashe Magnolia, Magnolia ashei, is a rare and endangered species found only in the Panhandle. And the Umbrella Magnolia, Magnolia tripetala, which is also found only in the Panhandle of Florida and is endangered.
There is a slew of cultivars as well, way too many to mention here.
