The Reason

Here is the reason for building the arbor: hops. We planted these here thirty years ago, and they are still producing. Hops have little barbs on their vines, so they attach themselves easily for climbing. By the end of the summer, they will have covered the whole arbor. We harvest them in August when a friend, who is an excellent brewer, has what he calls his “Fresh Hop Party.” Seven or eight of us who grow hops take our harvest there, and he brews 90 gallons of outstanding beer.
