St Cuthbert’s

As part of our church visiting programme some of us went today to St Cuthbert’s at the west end of Princes St in the shadow of the castle. They have retained some of their pews at the rear of the sanctuary.

The building is vast. It is apparently the oldest site in Edinburgh of a Christian church dating from the 7th century. There have been 7 churches on the site over the centuries. There have building we were in was late 19th century addition and the apse is both huge and impressive. It was designed by Hippolyte Blanc, and completed in 1894. He was the architect of our building, work on which started in 1876.
