Souter Lighthouse
We've had a great day - and we've made good use of our National Trust membership! We started by driving through Durham to Crook Hall Garden, and then travelling on to South Shields and Sunderland, to Souter Lighthouse and Lees. We had a talk with a Volunteer/Guide who shared the history of the lighthouse and I climbed 56 of the 76 steps to the top of the tower. The extra is the last 20 steps to the top - very steep, and I just couldn't do it, although to be honest, I was more worried about getting down again! It was the first purpose built electric lighthouse apparently and was decommissioned in 1989.
