Kings
Kings day in Amsterdam… how to describe?
Set off at 9am and walked 4 miles into central amazing Amsterdam. Throngs of crowds the whole way all bedecked in orange.
Through Vondelpark where families lined the pathways selling their bric a brac, fairy cakes, games like splat the rat, singing, dancing you name it, everyone having fun and the loveliest of atmospheres the sunny sun.
Reached the canals and absolute insanity. Boats filled the canals, each boat filled with people young and old partying, booming music and dancing. The streets similarly chocks block with impromptu djs on doorsteps and street discos at every street corner. It should have been claustrophobic but instead just funny madness that you couldn’t help being caught up in.
Favourite moment was at the top of Herrengracht, which was a bottleneck and became party central. One very glam boat came under the bridge, up stood a cool older guy onto the back of the boat, sax in hand and rifted to the house music that was blasting. Literally both sides of the canal and all the folk on boats joined in. Magical moment I’ll never forget
If you get the chance everyone must go to Kingsday just once
Me, I’ll be back! Got my orange lei and Alice band to wear now :)
