Vappu, May Day 1.5.
No Vappu is complete without a glass of sima and a munkki. Sima, a lightly fermented lemon mead, is sweet, fizzy, and homemade in many Finnish households. Munkki (sugar-coated doughnuts) belongs to Vappu too!
Vappu is Finland’s ultimate spring celebration — a joyful mix of protest and party, tradition and play. Originally rooted in the workers’ rights movement and the academic calendar, Vappu has grown into a two-day explosion of colour, community, and cheeky student culture.
Mead and donuts were also part of our May Day celebration, but otherwise we deviated from the mainstream. Bird watching at the bird tower and a walk in the forest.
