Working It Out
Big commotion out in the yard this afternoon. The mockingbirds did NOT like the hawk sitting on a wire near their nest in our lemon tree. As for the hawk, well, he didn’t care what anybody thought.
The mockingbird's nest is a bit of an inconvenience since the lemon tree is right behind the barbecue grill and on the path to the vegetables. I’ve put up a funky barricade to remind everyone to be careful back there. I can’t really figure out if there are eggs yet; half the time it doesnt seem that anyone is sitting on the nest. It’s funny to watch the birds come back to the site—they take a roundabout route, pretend to be checking out the fig tree, feint to the right, feint to the left—it takes forever for one of them to finally dive into the tree.
I do believe it’s the first of May, although you can’t tell from the weather around here. Fogged in and somewhat drizzly in the mornings, sometimes clearing in the afternoon, but windy and cold.
