Predators...

Went to Home Park with the macro lens with the intention of snapping some bug life around Wick Pond. Unfortunately the water irises and mint around the edge of the pond seem to be a little late this year, perhaps because of the dry weather and low water level.

The upside of the low water level was that I spotted a couple of these fairly large carp cruising up and down and occasionally breaking the surface. The 100mm lens wasn't ideal, and it was only when I downloaded the photos to the laptop that I realise the surface of the pond was teeming with small flies, which obviously make a pleasant snack for the fish.

The extra is of a very relaxed young heron who didn't seem at all concerned that I was well within 10 metres of it. In the past I've seen the herons in the park lurking in ambush to carry off ducklings, goslings, and even cygnets, but a complete lack of baby birds had reduced this one to snatching the few passing damsels flies that were about.
