A Bevy Of Swans

This morning we caught a bus over to Wells for a mooch around, hoping to get a glimpse of this year’s brood of cygnets on the moat at the Bishop’s Palace.

As you can see, we were in luck, with all 7 of them on parade behind a proud parent. Apparently, the collective noun for a brood of swans is a bevy or, more obscurely, an eyrar, a word dating from the C16.

We sat outside the cafe by the Palace lawn enjoying cheese scones before stopping to buy some books in Smith’s on the way to catch the bus back to Street.
