Day trip from Ragusa Ibla to Modica
The Baroque towns of south eat Sicily have steps! Many steps. We have gone up and down many of them this holiday!
Early breakfast again . We left our place at 835 to get to the train station in Ragusa Superiore. We initially were going to get the wee bus that shoots about the tiny streets curling the old town but decided to walk as Google maps said 35 mins…. We took the route which was through tiny little alleyways with down then up down then up steps. Through alleys we would never have used normally exploring the town. They were beautiful but we had to keep going for the train. We got to the train station with minutes to spare - the 9:27 to Modica. S used the machine at the station to buy the ticket as the train was sitting to depart. I was in the train watching him wrestle with the instructions but we made it and off we went the 19 minute journey to another Baroque town.
It was a 15 minute walk from the station to the old town , we could see the magnificent cathedral in the distance. We needed a coffee first and found a good one over looking one of the churches with huge steps leading up. The guy that owned the shop was a coffee professor his barista skills made the perfect coffee, the very best of the holiday , although we never had a bad one . We had a lighter than air pastry as well.
We went into this church which was a nice interior. So different from the Spanish ones we’ve been in.
There was another church further up hill so we headed there and climbed more huge steps to get in.
By the time we had done all this it was time for another sit down with some granite . It was a nice spot with a grand view. We next headed to the castle but Italian hours, shut at 1 so that was a shame. We went back down into the main area and went into the chocolate shop as Modica is famous for chocolate making. Their chocolate is very hard to, not the type I like but it tastes better once it has dissolved in your mouth.
Decided to get the train back to Ragusa earlier than planned. Got the 2 instead of the four. On arrival we got the wee bus to the old town - walking g back again was a step too much and it was a hot day.
Back to Ibla, back to the b and b for a cuppa and a relax in the gardens then out for our tea . We had more walking around. It was buzzing with Italians as it’s a local holiday.
Not surprisingly we were done in by 9pm!
