Everything in this house is gay!
Sue and I saw The Wedding Banquet today, and I recommend it enthusiastically. Intelligent dialog, brilliant acting, multi-faceted relationships. Every character changes, develops, learns and grows. A rare example of superb screenwriting. We laughed plenty, I cried (I’m a crier, never mind), and we especially loved the Korean grandmother, played by Youn Yuh-jung, who is a year younger than Sue and was the first Korean to win an Oscar (not for this movie, but for one a few years back).
In her off-stage life, Youn Yuh-jung has a gay son, and the sensitivity of her acting is fascinating to watch. My favorite of her lines: “Oh, so then she isn’t insane, she’s just American.”
The image is from my living room. It’s a print of a Valentine blip I made in 2023. I have sometimes chuckled to myself that the books and images in my house are so Queer, if a robber broke in, he’d realize in a fat minute that the person who lives here is gay. Years ago when I worked in a treatment program for heroin addicts in New York City, a co-worker visited my apartment and told me how it would look to a thief. “It’s obvious there’s nothing here of any value. If I were the thief, I’d move on and take nothing.” At the time I was offended that anyone would think my books and souvenir rocks had no value, but later someone did break into my apartment and took nothing.
P.S. this movie is a re-make, but we didn't see the version filmed in the 90s so can't comment on that.
