Better late than never
This afternoon I completed an almost four year old plan to commemorate , even if slightly tongue in cheek, the fact that my good friend and former MSP colleague Bruce Crawford raised the flag at Feorlean in July 2021.
I had always wanted to put a flagpole on a little rise above the house, but didnt do anything about it until I retired. The I needed two shots at getting the pole - the first one got lost by the carrier , quite an achievement as it was 5 metres long.
Bruce and Jacqueline were over in Kames for a couple of nights, and they came to visit just at the time it was erected, so I asked him to do the honours. MSPs do get asked to open things, so he was well used to that type of invitation though I don't think he (or I) had ever performed the deed for a flagpole.
It was only right to add a plaque, given that was always part of such ceremonies. I think I have blipped one or two of them , though not the opening of the Loch Lomond National Park Centre in Balloch when I was Environment Minister, which featured an inscribed piece of stone so heavy it couldn't be mounted on a wall. It is apparently still in a cupboard.
So after Bruce had done the deed I got hold of a wee metal plaque, but then I found there was nothing to which I could attach it. That is until yesterday when I noticed two blocks of wood nearby which I suddenly thought might sit very well at the base of the pole.
They do, so today I screwed the plaque into place and the long unfinished job is now done.
Of course I had to include a bit of the flagpole in the Blip.
