Lost in Thought

The Monitor! (MM589)

I kept this beautiful old brass blowlamp when we cleared out Gill's parents' house just as a photo subject.  It's the type of thing a decorator might have used to burn off old paint before preparing the surface and repainting.

Fuelled by paraffin (kerosene) the evaporator is preheated with methylated sprit (ethanol/methanol & bitter flavouring) which sits in a small dip on top of the fuel tank (I kid you not!) drawn up along a wick to burn with an open flame.
Pressure from the small pump you can see pushes the fuel up through the evaporator and out through the 'jet'  where it is ignited by the user.

Probably then used to burn and scrape off lead based paint - what could possibly go wrong?
For additional excitement use up a ladder next to a thatched roof :-)
