A Bit Too Much ?
Now I've uploaded this, I realise I have overdone the luminance ... I was trying to bring out the colour of the sea pinks. I've never seen such flourishing cushions of them. Alas, there were very few birds, mostly fulmars, but not a single puffin ...
We dithered over taking a boat trip out to the Skelligs. The landing trips haven't started yet (and I'm not sure I could make it all the way up and down in the time available). Just sailing out and round them didn't really appeal. So we chose to do the circuit of the cliff-tops and were rewarded with stunning views. I've run out of words to describe the glorious weather we've had, not a dull day, far less a rainy one.
We went down to see the Old Barracks in Cahersiveen this morning. It's a phony Scots Baronial tower, built to house the policemen who were stationed here to protect the first transatlantic underwater telegraph cable. The Government (in London, in those times) were afraid the Irish Nationalists would target it. It survived. The Barracks were burnt out in the 1920s, but have been restored to make a visitor centre celebrating local history. Full of fascinating stories about local people we'd never have heard of otherwise.
The Skelligs are the lumps of rock in the extra. Monks lived there a long time ago - maybe 2000 years??
