Ajmer
I'd only ever passed through, bus and train to Pushkar, no reason to stay. But there's a lake and mountains, geographies enough to be tempting.
So a day trip in search of a Jain temple and a Sufi shrine.
A city. Immediately busy, culture shock after the last weeks, heat and pollution a different pace.
Temple found, refused entry into the architecturally interesting portion, head spinning with huge models of mythological landscapes and their inhabitants, not what was expected.
The Sufi shrine suffered from memories of Turkey, the thought of peace, some echo of the blue mosque having travelled east. But noise and games, enlightenment at a price, faith spilling out but a busy place.
Outside a sweetshop, possibly the best I'll ever eat from.
And back to Pushkar and the evening Aarti, the quiet ghats, watching the shifting night from the balcony and knowing you won't be moving soon.
