Catania - last day in Sicily
We were up around 7am and got packed up (doesn’t take long). We went for breakfast first (to the fab Cafe along the road), a walk down to the harbour and then back to get our rucksacks for the train at 10:20. It’s a short flat walk to the train station from our apartment. It was very well situated in the old town near the Duomo. We liked it, and Ortigia itself.
Train was on time and our carriage wasn’t busy. We had a table but it was a quick hour to Catania and then a 15 min walk to our hotel.
The room was ready so we put our stuff in the room. We only booked it yesterday and it was fine for location but pretty basic. And the room was boiling. We had a small balcony which we could see Mount Etna. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The receptionist directed us to a place in a square that had the Opera house next to it for a Granite, and it was so good, almond flavour and much better than the one in Modica.
We then had a walk round the historic centre of Catania, the Duomo and the square with the Elephant fountain was stunning. More baroque.
We were hungry by this time and found a restaurant. We sat down and looked at the menu. There was nothing in it I liked and thought it overpriced . We decided to move away to one with food that I could relate to. And found one that sold fish and chips. It was next to the Fish Market so k ew it would be fresh and tasty. S had the lasagne. We had a good chat with a guy from London who now lives in Barcelona and has a tour company. Long story but he was interesting to chat to and he also asked us about ourselves so wasn’t just a me, me, me type of guy.
Walked back to the hotel to have a relax and then back out for a walk. We decided to climb up the many windy steps to the roof of the Duomo where this pic was taken, at sunset.
We sat there for a good while looking g over the rooftops in every direction. There wasn’t many people there. Which was good as the stairs in the final section were tiny and there wasn’t many people traffic lights in operation. We were last down.
Another walk then Back to the hotel. Plenty time in the morning to pack.
Home tomorrow.
Back to auld claes and purridge!
