Tin Tabernacles of 2025 #3, #4 and #5
We love the yurt we're staying in for a couple of nights. Thank goodness it isn't canvas but a sturdy, and cosy, wooden structure. It is so well designed and equipped. And it's tiny!
We have ventured to different places today to find the four tin tabernacles in Lewis. Three and four are in the collage. Not great examples I'm afraid.
#3 is at Airidh a' Bhruaich/Arivurach and it was originally the school and then a Church of Scotland mission. It's now owned by the chap who lives next door and from the looks of things he uses the tin building as a store.
#4 is at Grabhair/Gravir and was also a CofS mission - now it's attached to a newer house. A bit disappointingly modernised.
#5 saved the day. It's the main and was a CofS mission too at Orasaigh/Orinsay. The annoying building behind is the community hall - couldn't get rid of it. The mission hall is locked but you can see that the pews are still in place.
What should have been #6 has been demolished and a new house built on its footprint. I must say that the house has been built in an appropriate style and is clad in corrugated iron but it's not a tabernacle.
I've allowed myself one bird today - a lovely golden plover. We've been on a beautiful beach on the west coast and are now back in the yurt for a cup of tea. Then another walk - this is a pretty part of the island.
Thanks again for all the visits while I'm busy
