Grassington
Our second day in the Dales. I was out early to clear skies. I thought it might be an idea to go to Gordale Scar as it would be in shade and appropriate for a waterfall. I was wondering how much water would be coming down, but when I couldn't even hear the burble of water in the beck coming down from the gorge, it didn't bode well. When I turned the final corner it was all but a trickle coming down. Last time I was here you could get wet from the spray before you could even see the waterfall.
After breakfast, we headed towards Grassington, the fictional Darrowby in the 5 TV series, All Creatures Great and Small. It was a popular location for tourists but we managed to get a seat outside at the Drover (Devonshire) Arms, for a quick pint and G&T. We got chatting with a local lady who told us we'd only missed by a few days the filming of some of the scenes for this autumn's series.
After the village we walked along the River Wharfe which flows along the side of the village. Even this river looked in desperate need of some more water.
Our drive home was via Wharfedale, Littondale and Nab End, with its steep glacial valley somewhat reminiscent on one side of High Cup Nick. It was a stark contrast to the road we took to Grassington, with its meadows and quaint villages. The Dales doesn't disappoint.
