Monster Bikes

When you look at places to visit in Budapest the New York Cafe pops up....it is expensive, not the best service or the best cakes, but it is stunning inside and an experience. There was a long queue outside, but it kept moving along and within twenty minutes we were sitting inside. It is huge and very opulent.

We were booked on to a monster bike tour in the afternoon so we grabbed a Bolt and headed over the Danube. We were quite early so we used our Lime app to hire a couple of electric scooters and whizz up and down the bank of the Danube. It was quite good to get a feel of them again before we zipped off the monster bikes.

The bikes have huge wheels and feel very stable. There were six of us on the tour and our guide, Judy, showed us how to use them, let us have a little practise and then off we zoomed. I had a hairy moment going round a roundabout, but other than that it was fantastic. We headed to Margaret Island where there are no cars. There are lots of fun bikes where up to six people can go on them. It was such a great place and if we hadn't booked the tour we probably wouldn't have seen it at all. Sue lost control at one point as we were setting off and crashed into a tree. We had just been shown the oldest tree there (lots had been destroyed during WW2)....thankfully it wasn't that one! No-one was hurt and I'm sorry to say I couldn't stop laughing. We loved the bikes! Two hours of great fun.

Next was trip to Rudas Thermal Baths. They have a rooftop panorama pool with views over the Danube. We sat in the water and cooked, then went in a few different indoor pools...some hot, some cold. We were hot after all the sunshine and the bikes and the hot water nearly finished us off lol. We then walked over the bridge back to Pest. There was a lovely looking restaurant and it was good to sit down and order a cold drink. But.....

Oh Lordy, the service was terrible. We kept asking where our drinks were and were told they were coming. It took forever, fifty minutes. I'd only asked for a coke! They apologised and said our drinks would be free...so Sue ordered more wine lol. The food took ages to arrive, we were just about to walk off. Thankfully, it tasted good, but we refused to pay any service charge.

We went for a drink as we wandered around and then walked back to the hotel through the very lively Jewish Quarter. We were completely knackered, but another great day.
