VERONICA persica: Persian Speedwell
Angus & I saw these TINY blue flowers, in the far reaches of the park.
I do love all blue flowers, so I was very interested. Little did I know,
that this little annual herb (1 centimeter) has such an interesting history.
It grows in fields & lawns & prefers moist conditions. Check our my
EXTRA to see a small patch of it, which is one of many. These blue flowers attract bees, butterflies & hummingbirds; but, some consider it a weed.
It is a native of Eurasia, but mysteriously has become widespread
in the British Isles (where it was recorded in 1825) North America,
eastern Asia, Australia & New Zealand. How this happened is a
mystery. It is too tiny to be a coveted landscape plant.
It is edible & has been used, by herbalist, to treat snake bite, hemorrhaging, rheumatoid arthritis, asthmas & as an expectorant.
