Nude Cats and Cool Cats
I spotted these two nude cats in a second-floor window as I was out doing errands after spending an inordinate amount of time looking at the 306 cool cats whose images from the Met Gala made Vogue online today. It was an historic Met Gala because it was the first ever dedicated to Black Fashion. In a time when Black people’s history is being stricken from the record by white supremacists including the current US President, it is important to look up, to pay attention, and not just to chalk it off to conspicuous consumption. This year’s Met Gala is profoundly different from all the ones that have come before.
If you have twenty-one minutes and are interested in Black history (mostly in the USA, but also in the UK and other European countries) this video tells the story of the Black Dandy, of Black Tailors and Black Designers, Black Photographers and Black Pride. It tells a story of Black Actors and Black Models who usually experience being the “only Black face” on the set. And how this event was different. And why.
