Beliefs enacted into law
Yesterday I spoke a one red state (aka dominated by MAGAts) regressing into segregation. Today I speak of another red state, Tennessee , whose Governor (Bill Lee) last week signed into law the Medical Ethics Defense Act, which lets healthcare practitioners refuse to perform or pay for a procedure or prescription that goes against their personal morals, ethics, or religious beliefs.
The legislation, which applies to medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and insurance companies, immediately went into effect with Gov. Lee’s signature.
The legislation was backed by the lobbying group, the Alliance Defending Freedom — a clever name which suggests the group defends freedom but in fact stands for limiting the freedom of some groups. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated it an anti-LGBTQ hate group.
But fear not, the bill’s sponsor — Rep. Bryan Terry, R-Murfreesboro — told lawmakers that the bill is not discriminatory. “This bill has nothing to do with objecting to care based on someone’s race, color, sex, religion, or nation of origin,” Terry said. Of course not because what else are Republican belief systems based on, right?
So if a pedestrian wearing a pride t-shirt gets run over, ambulances in Tennessee can just drive right on if the EMTs happen to believe homosexuality is a sin…
Is America great again yet?…
