Coffee break on Inis Arcáin
An epic day out today and too wrecked to blip in the evening. Finola and I took the ferry to Sherkin Island (free bus pass applies to ferries too) , a 10 minute voyage from Baltimore. The day was magnificent, wall to wall sunshine and everywhere looked jaw-dropingly stunning. Originally we were going as a recce for a wildflower walk Finola was going to lead, but the venue changed, and we decided to come out anyway and just amble and rambled around. We admired copious wildflowers marvelling at how the foxgloves were already out, pursued little blue butterflies, stumbled through the bracken to a holy well, trespassed in someone's garden to look at some rock art, paddled in Silver Strand and were thrilled to find a small place selling coffee and homemade lollies. We also managed to sneak into the ruins of the abbey, usually padlocked tight but we found a back gate open and squeezed through.
The main shows our coffee break not far from the well, sitting amongst the bluebells. It doesn't get better than this. But maybe it does- how wonderful to come across Free Palestine emblazoned in the small estuary. In 2022 , 54 Ukrainians were given accommodation on the island, nearly doubling the population. On the edge of the world but very much part of it.
