None Shall Pass

Sal crossing the clapper bridge known as Tarr Steps.

Folklore has it that the Devil himself built the bridge, and that he promised to kill anyone who attempted to cross. A cat was sent across and the local people saw it vaporised before their very eyes, and so then the local parson was sent over. He met with the Devil at the midway point of the bridge, and stood firm before the demon, despite being sworn at and shouted at. The Devil eventually conceded, allowing the people to cross his bridge. No demons were hurt in the taking of this photo!

On our way over we investigated the old ruins of the cable winding house built by the Somerset Railway which helped transport the minerals mined in the Brendon Hills to the harbour at Watchet for transportation. It is known locally as The Incline.

Oh and as a special treat, we saw loads of Exmoor Ponies and their foals.
